RE

At Turnham Academy, we believe that Religious Education contributes dynamically to children and young people’s education in schools by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. The principal aim of RE is to engage pupils in systematic enquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address, so that they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own.

In RE our pupils learn about and from religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. Teaching therefore should equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities. It should develop pupils ' aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society, with its diverse religions and worldviews. Pupils gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence. They learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.

RSE and PSHE

Our RSE and PSHE curriculums enable pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work.RSE and PSHE have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

At Turnham Academy we support children to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum has been designed to prepare children to manage the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up in such rapidly changing and challenging times. It also helps children to connect and apply the knowledge and understanding they learn in all subjects to practical, real-life situations, while helping them to feel safe and secure enough to fulfill their academic potential.
