At Turnham Academy, we follow FFT's Success for All Phonics, which is a DfE approved Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme (SSPP). This begins in our Early Years and continues into KS1 and KS2 (where needed). We teach grapheme phoneme recognition, sound blending and word level blending which develops early reading skills.  Our phonics and early reading strategy moves seamlessly into our reading curriculum in KS1 &KS2, building on the key skills needed to be fluent and successful readers.

Reading

Reading is the cornerstone of our curriculum. For children to succeed in school, they must be reading at the national curriculum stage of learning by the end of each year group. Ensuring children are successful readers enables them to access all areas of learning, now and in the future.

At Turnham Academy, pupils are equipped with the necessary skills to communicate effectively, whether that be in speaking and listening, reading or writing. We encourage our pupils' curiosity of reading and understanding of the world through the careful selection of reading books throughout the school. Pupils are encouraged to read daily to foster a passion for reading and to enhance their vocabulary so that they express themselves in a wide range of contexts. They draw on knowledge and skills from texts and prior subject knowledge across the curriculum to write a range of genres.
